Five cost lines appeared only after my parents came home: Rs 76,500 in total. The receipt audit, and the extras line your Umrah budget needs on day one.
My parents' Umrah cost Rs 872,500, not the Rs 796,000 on the sheet I had planned so carefully. The difference, Rs 76,500, was not a scam, a fine or a single big mistake. It arrived in five small lines that no agent had quoted and my first budget had never carried: an intercity transport upgrade, food above the estimate, laundry, a Saudi SIM with data, and overweight gifts on the return flight.
When they came home, I added their actual receipts to the family spreadsheet, line by line, and this article is that audit, published so your family can budget these lines on day one instead of discovering them at an airport scale. The trip itself was planned at the estimate levels I reviewed in October 2026, and your prices will differ by season, airline and exchange rate, so treat every figure as a worked example and confirm live prices before you pay anyone.
The Evening Of The Receipts
My father keeps paper. Every taxi chit, every laundry slip, every top-up receipt from the trip came home in a shirt pocket and then in an envelope, and one evening I spread the envelope across the same kitchen table where the umrah cost calculator first took shape as a spreadsheet.
Most of the sheet survived the comparison well. Flights, visa, both hotels and the group transport figure landed within a few hundred rupees of what I had planned, which is what estimates are for. The damage sat in five lines the sheet did not have at all, each budgeted at exactly zero.

The five lines the first budget never had, at their actual amounts (PKR, family receipts)
Basis: two adults, twelve nights. Each line was budgeted at zero in the original plan.
Miss One: The Intercity Upgrade
The group transport figure in my plan covered the standard road transfers, including the Makkah to Madinah leg by coach. On the day, my parents looked at five hours on the road, looked at each other, and bought two seats on the Haramain High Speed Railway instead, which covers the same leg in a little over two hours. It was money well spent for two people in their sixties, and I would tell them to spend it again.
It cost Rs 21,000 above the allowance already sitting in the transport line, and it appears on no package quote I have ever been handed, because quotes describe the transfer they include, not the better one you will choose on the day. The repair is simple: if your pilgrims are older, price the train into the transport line before departure and let the coach be the saving, not the other way round.
Miss Two: Food Ran Hot
My food line was not wrong in the way the others were. It existed, at Rs 6,000 per adult per day, and it was honestly estimated from ordinary restaurant prices. The receipts averaged Rs 6,900. The gap had three small causes: meals eaten close to the Haram cost more than meals a few streets away, my parents kept inviting fellow pilgrims from their hotel to eat with them, and nobody in my family budgets hospitality well because nobody wants to.
Rs 900 a day sounds like a rounding error until you multiply it the way a trip does: two adults, twelve days, Rs 21,600. Food will run a little hot on almost any real trip. The fix is not a bigger argument about the daily figure. It is admitting, in the sheet, that the figure is a floor rather than a ceiling. Meals obey the same geography as hotel rooms, priced street by street as you move away from the Haram, and I worked that gradient in Distance Is The Real Currency: Hotel Prices Near The Haram.
Every quote I collected was honest about the trip it described. None of them described the whole trip.
Misses Three And Four: The Laundry And The SIM
Laundry is the line younger travelers laugh at and older travelers pay. Twelve days of ihram garments, daily clothes and hotel living produced a stream of small laundry slips that totaled Rs 8,400. I had budgeted nothing, on the unspoken assumption that clothes wash themselves. They do not, and hotel laundry near the Haram is not priced like a Multan dhobi. A family that plans to wash a few things in the room should still carry a laundry line, because the days stack up faster than the good intentions.
The SIM was the opposite kind of miss: small, wise, and entirely foreseeable. Two Saudi SIMs with data cost Rs 7,500 for the trip and meant my parents could call each other inside the crowds, share their location, and video call home without hunting for hotel Wi-Fi. I had simply never written the line down.
Deciding how much data two phones actually need is a calculation in its own right, and I keep it with the other tools on this site as the data usage calculator, because the airport kiosk will happily sell a pack three times the size your parents can use. Buy the SIM. Just buy it on the sheet first.
Miss Five: The Airport Scale
The last miss was the most avoidable and the most expensive per minute. Dates, gifts for the grandchildren, gifts for the neighbors who had asked for prayers: the return bags came in six kilos over the allowance, and the excess baggage charge at check-in was Rs 18,000, paid at the worst possible moment, at a counter, with a queue behind it.
Airlines publish their excess baggage charges per route and per kilo, and the same six kilos prepaid online or left behind would have cost a fraction of that figure or nothing at all. I now weigh the gift shopping as part of the trip budget and leave two spare kilos in each bag as a rule of the house.
The Line I Add Now
The use case under this article is a first-time pilgrim's family building a budget that survives contact with the real trip, which is precisely the position my family was in. My repair was to give the sheet a permanent extras line, set at about a tenth of the trip total, named for these five misses until a family's own receipts rename it.
On a trip planned at Rs 796,000, that line holds roughly Rs 80,000. Had it existed, the real total of Rs 872,500 would have landed inside the budget instead of above it, and not one of the five surprises would have felt like a failure of planning. I still keep the audit's headline in front of me whenever I open that sheet: Rs 76,500 is what the trip cost after the trip had already been paid for, and not one rupee of it bought anything my parents regret.
None of this makes the original sheet a failure. The same kitchen table method that produced the Rs 796,000 plan is what caught the misses, because the receipts had a sheet to land on.
If you are comparing agent quotes for your own family, the story of how that sheet was built is in The Three Agents Article, and it pairs naturally with this one: the first teaches you to open a total into lines, and this one teaches you which lines the totals leave out. Build both habits into your budget and the next envelope of receipts will hold far fewer surprises.
Questions People Ask About This Page
What Costs Do Umrah Packages Usually Not Include?
On my family's first trip: an intercity transport upgrade, food above the daily estimate, hotel laundry, a Saudi SIM with data for two phones, and excess baggage on the return flight. Together they came to Rs 76,500 that no quote had mentioned.
How Much Extra Should I Budget Beyond The Package Total?
An extras line of about a tenth of the trip total worked for us as the repair. On a Rs 796,000 plan, that is roughly Rs 80,000 held back for the small lines, and whatever survives the trip comes home as savings instead of a shock.
Why Did The Food Cost More Than The Estimate?
Our estimate assumed Rs 6,000 per adult per day and the receipts averaged Rs 6,900, because meals near the Haram cost more and parents feed people they meet. The gap of Rs 900, multiplied by two adults and twelve days, quietly became Rs 21,600.
Is A Saudi SIM Worth It, Or Should I Roam?
For us, two local SIMs with data came to Rs 7,500 for the whole trip and kept both parents reachable, which settled it. Check your own roaming charges before you decide, and size the data pack to your real usage rather than buying the largest one at the airport.
Are These The Prices I Will Pay?
No. The trip figures are my family's actual receipts from a budget planned at October 2026 reviewed estimate levels, published so you can copy the method. Your prices will differ, and fares and rates move with season, airline and exchange rate, so confirm live prices before paying anyone.
